Obituary of Ann J. Arnett
The life and legacy of Ann J. Arnett began over 80 years ago when she was born on February 25, 1931, to John James, Jr. and Idella C. James in Detroit, Michigan. The family first settled in South Philadelphia, and years later migrated to West Philadelphia where they laid roots for more than sixty years.
Ann was educated in the Philadelphia Public School System where she attended E.M. Stanton Elementary School, Barrett Junior High School, and South Philadelphia High School. As a young girl Ann’s passion for education inspired her to attend Cheyney State Teachers College. For a brief period while attending Cheyney State, Ann met and fell in love with Marshall T. Arnett. They were united in holy matrimony on September 7, 1952. From this union two children were born, Vincent Maurice Arnett who preceded her in death and Elaine Arnett Johnson. Ann returned to Cheyney State to complete her course of studies and received a Bachelor Degree in Special Education. She embarked on her career in education with the Chester Upland School District where she served for 30 plus years. Throughout her teaching career Ann received numerous awards for her outstanding teaching performance.
Ann’s spiritual life was second to none. She loved the Lord and it resonated in everything she did. In 1942, Ann was baptized and accepted the Lord as her personal savior at Union Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend James E. Kirkland. Throughout her spiritual journey she served as a faithful member of the senior choir where she always had a leading solo. Ann was a Vacation Bible School supervisor for many years, Chairperson for the Church’s Anniversary and a faithful weekly attendee of prayer meetings.
Some of her pastimes included: crocheting, listening to music, dancing and spending time with family and friends.
Ann leaves behind to cherish fond memories her sister Ethel James, daughter Elaine A. Johnson, three grandchildren, Daniel, Kim and Brittney, four great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, three nieces, four nephews, and an array of friends and extended family.
Finally, Ann’s devoted and loving caregiver of nine years, Donna Parker, who affectionately referred to Ann as “Momma”.
