Dr. Wilma J. Farmer
Dr. Wilma J. Farmer was a retired educator who served the Camden City School System for 50 years. She began as a third grade teacher at Sumner School. During her tenure in Camden she was a reading teacher, reading supervisor, Supervisor of grades Kindergarten through Frist, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Acting Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction and Assistant Superintendent of Administration and Support Services.
In addition to her work in Camden, Dr. Farmer taught at Rowan University and Rutgers University. She was also a consulting author for several textbook companies. She served as a supervisor/mentor in the In-Service Teaching Program at Montclair State University (P-3 Certification).
Dr. Farmer held Bachelors and Master’s Degrees in Education from Glassboro State College (now Rowan University). She also held a Doctorate of Education from Temple University.
Dr. Farmer was a long time member of Mount Pisgah A.M.E. Church, Lawnside, where she taught church school and was past-President of the Margaret C. Cox Missionary Society. Over the years in addition to teaching church school, Dr. Farmer was the Church School Superintendent, Christian Education Director, a member of Stewardess Board A, a member of the choir, Church Treasurer, and a Trustee.
Dr. Farmer was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Chi Rho Chapter, and Delta Gamma Society International. She was also a member of the St. John of God Community Services Board of Directors.
She was a long-standing member of the South Jersey Links.
She was married to the late George A. Farmer, Sr. The couple had two sons, George, Jr. (deceased) and Michael. She had one grand-daughter, Alina. Sister Bernice A. Brown, 2 Special daughters Adrienne Parham(Melvin),Chandra Justice, Special niece Tomicko Downing, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dr. Farmer attributed the success in her life to God, whose grace and mercy illuminates her pathway and ordered her steps.
Her favorite scripture was “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
