Obituary of Bennie Franklin Lewis

On the evening of May 23, 2020, Bennie Franklin Lewis passed peacefully at Inspira hospital at the age of 85.
Bennie was born on July 10, 1934 to the late Benjamin and Lucy Hogges-Lewis in Salem County, New Jersey. He attended Woodstown High School where he played his favorite sport of football. After high school he joined the service and received an honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps.
Bennie gave his life to Christ at an early age. He joined the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Glassboro, NJ and served for many years as an usher until his health failed. Bennie also sang alto in the male choir.
He met and married Doris Thornton in 1959 and from that union four children were born, Wanda, Beverly, Benjamin and Jonathan. They spent their early years in Camden, New Jersey and later relocated to Glassboro, New Jersey.
Bennie had various jobs. He worked at J.R. Williams, Campbell Soup and GAF Paper Mill for many years. His last employment was with Andy's Janitoral Services where he worked as a supervisor.
Bennie enjoyed taking his family on trips to the shore, and to visit relatives in Georgia and Ohio. He instilled in his children the value of education and hard work. Bennie was a quiet, laid back man who loved to help others. He was a hard worker and a dedicated Eagles fan. Bennie loved watching court TV and the news.
He leaves to cherish his memories his four children, Wanda (Dwaine) Smith, Beverly, Benjamin "Frank" and Jonathan. Four grandchildren, Leon, Kamesha, Jaleesa and Elijah, six great-grandchildren, two godsons Eric and Todd Dow, one brother, Prince "Eddie" (Miriam), and a host of nieces, nephews and close friends.
He is predeceased by sisters Arelene Morrison, Fanny Thomas, Annie Bell Fowler, Audrey Graves-Rawls, brother John "Ellis", sister-in-law Joyce Washington, and brother-in-law Walter "Sonny" Thornton.
Bennie will truly be missed by all that knew and loved him.
