Obituary of Marvin E Green, Jr.
Please share a memory of Marvin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Marvin E. Green Jr. sadly passed away on Dec 15, 2020, as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. Marvin was born on June 26, 1993, in Willingboro NJ, the son of Lolita Hawkes and Marvin E. Green. Marvin graduated from Kingsway Regional High School with honors and attended the University of Pittsburgh pursuing a degree in Computer Engineering.
In his younger years Marvin excelled both in academic endeavors as well as local and regional extracurricular activities. He was a member of Kingsway’s cross-country team and public speaking and debate team. He excelled as the winner of New Jersey Model Congresses Star Party Whip. Marvin volunteered frequently at the Gloucester County library and at his home church working to educate the elderly on computers. These experiences helped him to develop a great deal of patience and compassion that he would carry with him throughout his life.
Marvin enjoyed expressing himself through writing, photography, music and music production. He affectionately sought out the thrills of skateboarding, cycling and the great outdoors with affection for mountains and beaches. He expressed an appreciation for local arts everywhere he travelled and settled. Marvin occasionally participated in local spoken word and music events. Marvin took great pride in curating and publishing 9 editions of his celebrated Zines. He was also the Creative Director of the rap group the Naysayers which combined many of his artistic passions.
Marvin was innately an explorer; embarking on several cross-country road trips. He was very keen to learn about new cultures and lifestyles. These experiences helped shaped his zeal for cuisine and his travels were a driving force behind his exploration of veganism and his much-admired recipes. In fact, one of Marvin’s goals was to publish a cookbook.
Marvin’s travels took him to Wilmington, North Carolina where he lived for several years. Marvin considered Wilmington his home.
Marvin consistently inspired others to be the best version of themselves while he also strived to be the best version of himself. He was a dependable source of motivation and upliftment for many of his friends and family. Marvin’s own ardent desire to live authentically and on his own terms, was his priority. By doing so he encouraged others to do the same.
Marvin took great pride in being largely autodidactic. Teaching himself a great deal about computers, cars, gastronomy and photography. This desire to learn and improve often presented itself in his professional experiences. Marvin always presented the best version of himself in the workplace. He once recalled his joy at having received a 5-star rating from a secret shopper while working at Whole Foods.
That experience aided by his strong communication skills helped him to be well respected and loved in the workplace. At the time of his passing, Marvin was employed by SMS working as a Client Support Technician on the Space Missile Command Unit at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His colleagues have spoken wonderfully about Marvin, his work, and his personality. In honor of Marvin, a flag will be flown on the base at half mass at the behest of the Colonel. Ironically, his role there was quite similar to his volunteer experience in his younger days as he helped the elderly with computers from time to time. Marvin was also pursuing an IT degree from Western Governors University, while also quickly earning several CompTIA professional IT certifications.
Marvin was always a spiritual person and in November of this year he accepted Christ into his life at a church and homeless outreach where he volunteered with his girlfriend Breann and her family. Marvin was known for having a big, bright, welcoming smile. Marvin would want to be remembered as a kind, compassionate individual who sought to live authentically and in his words, to be himself completely.
Marvin is survived by his mother Lolita Hawkes, father Marvin E. Green (Delphine), and sister Imani. He leaves his maternal grandparents Otisher, and Pete as well as paternal grandmother Mary Green. He is survived by his maternal aunt, uncle and cousin Stanley, Jessica and Antoine. Also, his paternal Uncle Fred Green (Beatrice) and Godfather Michael A. Armstrong (Karen) and Godmothers Gayle Singleton (Andre) and Renau Daniels. He is also survived by his girlfriend Breann Spargo and a host of family members, best friends and loved ones.
