Obituary of Hattie L Conner

Hattie L. Conner, peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord on March 24, 2021 in Delran, New Jersey after a long illness. Hattie was born on March 16, 1934 in Darlington County, South Carolina to the late Thomas and Rosa Lee Pegues. She was the youngest of seven children. Preceded in death by siblings, Mae, Ruth, Alberta, Thomas Jr., Blanche and cousin Thomas O’Neal.
She was educated in the Darlington County, South Carolina School System. At an early age, she received Christ and was baptized at Hopewell Baptist Church in Darlington County, South Carolina.
Hattie married her first husband at a young age, that union produced five daughters, Hattie, Ruth, Janie, MaryAnn and Patricia. The family relocated to Burlington, NJ in the late 1950s.
In 1973, Hattie married Army Staff Sargent Johnson L. Conner and relocated to Tacoma, Washington where she lived until he preceded her in death. During her time in Tacoma she began a career as a healthcare provider for the State of Washington. After returning to New Jersey in 1982, she continued her career as a home healthcare provider for the State of New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD). She worked for DDD with relentless dedication for 30 years. She was highly praised for the caregiving services she provided to the people in her care.
Hattie was gifted with a loving and caring spirit. She loved God and her family. Everyone called her “Grandma” or “Miss Hattie.” She was known for speaking her mind, her motto was “I say what I mean, and mean what I say.” She was known for her generosity, always willing to give a helping hand. She worked hard to raise her daughters to be well rounded women. She had an obsession with maintaining a beautiful home and garden. She kept a beautiful yard and received many compliments for her hard work. She loved making things grow and poured love into each plant and flower; always giving God the Glory for his sunshine and rain.
Hattie loved the Lord and her favorite scripture was Psalm 121 and you could always hear her saying “I just want to make it to Heaven.”
She was a mother of five daughters; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook, and her family and friends loved her Sweet Potato Pie, Banana Pudding and Potato Salad. She loved watching the Soaps, especially “The Young and Restless”. She was so proud to witness the election of President Barack Obama and was very excited when she received an 80th birthday greeting from the President.
Surviving to mourn her death are her five daughters, Hattie (Washington) Bailey, Willingboro, NJ; Ruth Wilson, Clinton, MD; Jane Calhoun, Burlington, NJ; Maryann (Rick) Richardson, Willingboro, NJ; Patricia Wilson, Burlington, NJ. Grandchildren, Katera Coleman, Ron (Joan) Randall, Chantae (James) Figures, Heather (Ronin) Williams, and Melissa Richardson, (Washington Bailey III and Terrence Calhoun preceded her in death). Great-grandchildren (D’Andre, Sunasia, Seven, Kiara, Kaneya, Jaden, Imani and Corey); Great Great-grandchildren (Bryce and Skylar); one sister Alice Pelote-Burroughs (South Carolina); favorite nephew James O’Neal (South Carolina) , a treasured friend Allen Britt (Ft. Washington, MD) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who loved her dearly.
