Obituary of Rozzell N Carney
Please share a memory of Rozzell to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Rozzell “Honey” Nathaniel Carney went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 9, 2021 in Cedar Grove Nursing home. Rozzell, the youngest of five, was born to the late Silas Albert Carney, Sr. and Elizabeth Wallace Carney on February 19, 1940 in Elizabeth City County (Now City of Hampton, VA). He received his formal education at Union Elementary School, Y. H. Thomas Junior High School and attended George P. Phenix High School until he left to join the United States Air Force.
Rozzell began working with the late John Mallory Phillips at his seafood market at an early age before joining the Air Force. Their friendship spanned many years as did other friends in the neighborhood of Olde Northampton where he lived.
Rozzell married Marilyn Elizabeth Walker on April 26th of 1961. From this union came two handsome young men Troy and Michael Carney and a beautiful daughter Donna Carney-Moore.
After leaving the military in 1969 Rozzell entered the trucking industry where he worked for 45 plus years until he could no longer pass the eye examination. He was an exceptional entrepreneur who owned his own company for years and mentored a host of people including his two sons.
Rozzell loved to dance, bowl, dress like and model in GQ, and he never drove a car that wasn’t shining. If fact, he was such a good bowler he was only beaten by his son three times, twice after lung surgery and once with a sprained wrist. Roz was persistent and hard-working, yet compassionate and generous, he never met a person that he wasn’t willing to share his wisdom with. His kind demeanor and joyful spirit lit up every room he entered. He will be missed more than words can express.
He was predeceased by his parents, sister, Etta L. Scott, and daughter, Donna Leah Carney Moore.
Rozzell leaves to cherish his loving memories his sons Troy M. Carney and Michael A. Carney, daughter- in- laws Crystal and Tyra Carney ,devoted sister, Dorothy C. DeBrew of Hampton, VA, brothers Silas A. Carney, Jr. of Yorktown, VA and Joseph W. Carney in Thailand, a special childhood friend Charles “Hawk” Marshall of Hampton, VA, a host of grandchildren, great-grand-children and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
