Obituary
Obituary of Eugene C Johnson,Sr.
Please share a memory of Eugene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Eugene Calvin Johnson Sr, lovingly known as “Genie Boy”, was born on October 1, 1952 in Townsend, VA to the late James N. Johnson Sr. and Gladys Spady Johnson. He was called to his eternal home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 27, 2021.
Eugene “Genie Boy” was educated in the Northampton County School District. He graduated from Northampton High School as an all-around varsity letter athlete. He loved sports, but his passion was baseball. He played for the Trenton Dodgers as a catcher. Those who knew and saw him play witnessed how he intimidated the opposing team. His raspy growling voice and running alongside the batter to first base set him apart from other catchers.
Eugene met the love of his life, Frances in March 1990. When they met it was “like” at first sight. They soon became friends and began dating. Five years later, July 10, 1995, they were married at St. Mark A.M.E.
Eugene worked in Mansfield Township for the Sanitation Department in multiple roles for 23 years, G&G Landscaping for 6 years and Walmart for the last 5 years. He was a dedicated and devoted worker. He was always more than willing to lend a helping hand to anyone that needed it.
At an early age, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. He joined and was baptized at Ebenezer A.M.E Church in Capeville, Virginia, where he was a Junior Steward and in the youth choir. In 1997, he joined St. Mark A.M.E. Church in Lindenwold, NJ. He was licensed as a preacher under the late Presiding Elder Richard T. Druid. He attended the New Jersey Conference Ministerial Institute in Trenton, NJ and was ordained as a Local Elder in 2006. During this time, he received an Associate Degree from Strayer University in Business Administration. He was a member of the Senior Choir, Trustee, and the church’s videographer.
Eugene’s favorite pastime was playing and watching sports. He loved the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia 76ers and the L.A Dodgers. He was an avid baseball player himself. Being around him, you knew you were bound to hear “My Jesus, My Jesus, My Jesus”, “The Lord will make a way somehow” and/or “Nobody knows what the Lord has done for me”.
He was preceded in death by his parents James N. & Gladys Johnson and his nephew, Darius Johnson. Eugene leaves a devoted family and a host of friends to cherish his memories.
Surviving is his wife of 25 years, Frances M. Johnson. Two sons, Eugene (Samaria) Johnson Jr. of Darby, PA and Paul Johnson of Durham, NC. One brother, James (Sandra) Johnson Jr. of Philadelphia, PA and two sisters, Gloria Jean Stratton of Bayview, VA and Jamie Johnson of Townsend, VA. And a special cousin (sister) Teresa Gee of Southampton, NJ. Two grandsons, RayQuan and JaiQuil, and one granddaughter, TaiQuaaya. Two great-grandkids, Tykice and RaMahj. Two nieces, Dominique and Tenesha and three nephews, Taiyon, Dante and Trawn. Seven grand-nieces and two grand-nephews. A host of cousins and friends.
Eugene “Genie Boy” Johnson will truly be missed and loved. As always, we will rejoice that he is at rest and in the arms of Jesus.
