Obituary of Lula Mae Denny
Please share a memory of Lula to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lula Mae Denny entered HIS presence peacefully on July 6, 2021, in Camden, New Jersey, at 87. “Mama”. “Grandma”. “Sister”. These are some of the many names she was affectionately called. Lula lived by her own standards and created her own destiny. She valued her individuality and put no boundaries on her hopes for tomorrow. Her core values of dignity, strength, and love permeated throughout her matriarch tenure.
Lula Mae entered this Earth on December 11, 1933, in Monticello, Mississippi to Hazel and Melchia Benson. She matriculated through Mississippi Public Schools before moving to New Orleans in the 1950s. Her passion for nurturing the body and mind was evident to all those who encountered her. She migrated to New York City in the 1960s and built a home in South Jamaica, Queens. Lula Mae’s love for the Lord was ingrained in her throughout her lifetime. She joined the Antioch Baptist Church in South Jamaica, Queens. Her love for her community was cultivated and strengthened through her many roles as a Deaconess, Missionary, and Usher Board member-just to name a few. As a lover of Christ, she modeled for her family her commitment to service. Lula Mae’s compassion, knowledge, and capabilities allowed her to minister and educate all who were graced with her presence. Her unwavering faith in God was both food for her soul and inspirational to others. Her God-ordained gift was her ability to create a safe space, no matter how challenging a situation may be. She will be remembered for her assertiveness, tenacity, and benevolence, but, more importantly, that she was a child of God.
Lula-Mae married Beverly Denny. The marriage ascended 52 years until her untimely passing. They created a rich legacy and embraced life by traveling and spending time with loved ones throughout their amazing union. In 2003, they relocated to Willingboro, New Jersey where Lula Mae remained active at Evergreen Baptist Church. Eventually, Lula-Mae continued her commitment to Christ through her membership at Delaware Valley Baptist Church. She empowered everyone to find their purpose in life and understand that education is the secret key to life success.
Lula Mae’s endearment and dedication to her family were unmatched. Her love and legacy will live through her husband, Beverly. Her children Irma, Micheal (Aminia), Tyrone (Marye), and Kevin (Deidre). She is survived by her grandchildren Jamal, Gerald, Adrian, Tiffany, Leicia, Kiya, Aijha, Andre, John, Christian, and Isaiah. She is also survived by her affectionate great-grandchildren Tianna, Shania, Cody, Shaun Jr, Haile, Amiyah, Monadria, Chase, and Carter. Her siblings: Thelma, Bernice, James, Melchia, Hazel, and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Hazel, and Melchia Benson, daughter Diane, son Brian Christopher, and Grand Daughter Connie. Her siblings Dorothy Mae, Marcus, Jimmy, LZ, Cleophus, Malcolm, Minnie Bell, and TC
