Obituary of Charlene H. Wicks
Please share a memory of Charlene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Charlene Hope Wicks was born the third daughter to Margaretta Newby and Haywood Wicks on May 11, 1946. She joyfully answered the call of her Lord and Master Jesus the Christ on Monday, January 3rd, 2022.
She was educated in the Lawnside School District, attended Haddon Heights High School, did her undergrad work at Rutgers and Glassboro State Teachers College, aka Rowan University. Charlene went on to achieve her master’s degree at Hahnemann University Hospital. As a
single mom to Asha and Durango, Charlene “did what she had to do to get the job done”. As we used to say in the ‘70s’, “she brought home the bacon and fried it up in a pan.” She was a full-time mom with a full-time job, who used the faith she observed in her mother, her formal education, and the experience of real life to impart wisdom to everyone who came under her charge.
As a young child Charlene accepted Jesus as her Lord and was baptized at Grace Temple Baptist Church. Later in life she longed to draw closer to God and sought out and found a small Christian Fellowship where she rededicated her life to the Lord Jesus and began a journey of True Discipleship.
Charlene was a hard worker who began her employment career at Bell Telephone as a telephone operator while selling Life Insurance for Mutual of Omaha. She began to realize her desire for helping people at the Cherry Hill Women’s Center. Her educational career took her to Chesilhurst Public Schools, Overbrook High School, Edgewood High School and finally Lindenwold High School where she retired with the full benefits of a State School employee. After retirement, Charlene wasn’t finished helping people. She became a companion for an elderly lady through the Comfort Keepers Agency.
Charlene was preceded in death by her sister Dorthea White, her parents, Margaretta and Haywood Wicks, and the love of her life, fiancé McKinley Brown.
She leaves to mourn: her son Durango (Tenia), and her daughter Asha Wicks. Her grandchildren: Dominique, Endia, Qaadir, Almeer, Quinone, Saadiq, and Maya Hope. One Sister: Florence Patricia, who she lovingly called, ‘Tricia’. Two Nephews: Mendol (Kim), Jamil and one niece LoCrata. Two Special Great Nephews: Corey and Justin and a host of cousins and friends.
