Obituary of Catherine Gibson
Please share a memory of Catherine to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Catherine Marshall-Gibson was born in Morven, NC to the late Willie & Sarah Marshall. She passed from this life into eternal life on March 18, 2022 at Cooper University Hospital.
Catherine accepted Christ at a young age and attended Ramah Grove Baptist Church. She was educated in the Morven North Carolina School system.
Anyone that knew Cat (as she’s affectionately known) knew how much she loved her father. It wasn’t until his passing that she picked up her (3) children and joined her siblings in New Jersey in 1971 where she lived out the remainder of her life. Growing up Catherine was a very free and loving spirit. She enjoyed spending time with her two favorite cousins who were more like her sisters. They had a bond that they still shared up until her untimely passing. (Hattie Thompson, Queen Flowers) An incident in her teens changed the way she moved.
She loved her siblings and they truly loved her, but she wasn’t one to make a visit to your house. And because they loved each other they understood and made it a point to visit all the time. Raymond and Catherine's relationship was complicated to those on the outside looking in. For them it was love, because they let nothing keep them apart. What many didn’t understand was already understood between the two of them. They heard the whispers and chatter about them, but it didn’t change the fact they loved each other and were going to be together no matter what. Catherine was a nurturer. She showed the same kind of love to everyone unless you show her something different. Catherine worked at Laurel View Manor/Mt Laurel Convalescent Home from the early 80’s till she retired due to a disability in 95. She really enjoyed her job and the women she worked with. She even built a sister bond with one in particular whom she loved and affectionately called her sister. (Jacqueline Pierce- Clayton)
In 1985 Raymond grandsons came to live with them. They ( Joseph, Celassie,& Moses Velasquez) called him grandpa and her mom. In 95-96 a few more of Raymond's grandchildren moved in, and her being who she was slid right into the role of caregiving. It wasn’t until later after the last group moved back to NC she got custody of her grandson (Akeem Jenkins) who lived with her till he was old enough to take care of himself. When it came to Akeem & Znyia, Cat played no games about them. She never loved one more than the other; they both lived with her. Znyia lived with her until she decided to move back South in Jan 2009. Before making that big move Raymond & Catherine made a bigger move and were married Nov.1, 2008 before leaving to go back home as they affectionately called it. Due to Catherine’s ongoing health issues and him just ready to be out of there, they moved back to Nj where they stayed until their untimely passing.
Catherine enjoyed doing crosswords puzzles and watching her game show the Family Feud. She enjoyed talking on the phone to her favorite Aunt who preceded her in death. (Amelia Sturdivant) and spending time with her husband on outings with their aid (Glenda Delgado) of 2yrs whom they loved like she was family. Cat used to love to sew, she often sewed by hand until her hands no longer held the needles. She enjoyed sitting outside with her husband soaking up the sun and relaxing. And when I tell you she could cook some chicken & biscuit she was one of the best hands down. Catherine will be greatly missed.
Catherine was preceded in death by parents Willie & Sarah Marshall, her husband Raymond Gibson, married 18 years, together a lifetime. One son Celassie Velasquez, brothers Clyde, Willie Jr and Henry Marshall 3 sisters Mary, Annie and Minnie Liles.
