Please share a memory of Alice to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Deaconess Alice Elaine Gatewood was born on March 30, 1934 in Louisa, VA to the late Joseph and Amanda Smith. She departed this life on April 20, 2022 in the comfort of her home. Deaconess Alice Gatewood will affectionately be remembered for her love of the Soap Operas, Diet Pepsi, WWE Wrestling and sitting on her porch on Princess Ave, Camden talking, laughing and enjoying time with her family, friends and loved ones. She dedicated her life to being a servant of Christ and to her husband, children and extended family.
Deaconess Alice Gatewood received her education through the Louisa County, VA School system. On May 14, 1949, she married her childhood sweetheart, the late Deacon Robert H. Gatewood. From their union nine children were born. The family moved to Camden, NJ in 1969 and in 1970 joined the Little Rock Baptist Church under the leadership of
Reverend James E. Fitten. In January 1970, Sister Alice Gatewood was consecrated as Deaconess. Her devotion to Christ and the Little Rock Family is evident in her work she has done in her 53 years of membership.
Deaconess Alice Gatewood served as Ministry Leader of the Deaconess Board, Secretary of the Sunday school, Assistant Ministry Leader of the Missionaries, Member of the voices of Wisdom Choir, Treasurer for the Nurses Unit, and Secretary of the Mother’s Board and a member of the Gospel choir. Deaconess Gatewood was also a student of the Acts of the Holy Spirit Urban Technological Institute. One might say that “Little Rock Baptist was her home away from home”.
She is leaving to cherish her memory two sisters, Ann Smith and Florence White (Elwood), four children, Roger Gatewood (Carol), Earlina Holmes (Robert), Ronald Gatewood and Robin Rankins (Pete), as well as a host of Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, and Great-Great grandchildren.
