Obituary of Ella L. Allen

Ella Louise Mills, was born on May 10, 1937 to the late Opera and Shurmon Mills in Kinston, North Carolina. She was affectionately nicknamed “Suga” by family at a young age. Ella was educated in Kinston, North Carolina school system. She married her longtime friend and love of her life in the early 1950s. The couple left North Carolina and moved their family to Camden, New Jersey. Sammy preceded her in death on June 29, 2012. Ella Allen, age 84, passed away peacefully on April 24th, 2022 with family by her side.
Ella was known as “Mommy” to ALL and wore her title very well. She was a foster parent, guardian, caretaker, gardner, seamstress, shopper, confidant, school mom. She had a knack for putting together 1,000 piece puzzles and painting. She enjoyed a good party with family and was never shy on the dance floor. Ella had a vivacious personality that people were drawn too. If you sat next to her you was talking and laughing. During her many shopping trips she always came back with many nick-nacks to add to the collection. She enjoyed hopping in the Cadillac and going for a ride. Ella also enjoyed riding on the back of her husband’s motorcycle and sitting on the passenger side while her husband did long hauls. Ella was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her grandchildren and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as a grandma, great-grandma, and great-great-grandma. She loved sharing stories, taking pictures, and throwing up the deuces.
Preceding her in death were one brother, Charles White; one sister Elizabeth Olds; three daughters, Helen Marie, Marguerite, Carolyn; and one son Curtis; two son-in-laws, Hobart and Eddie; one grandson, Kenneth “Smoochie” one great-granddaughter Dijon’ne.
She leaves to mourn one brother-in-law Robert Allen; one sister-in-law Dorothy Carver; four children Deffie Ruiz, Linda Carter, Amin Muslim (Bridgette), Verna Steeg; seven grandchildren LaShaunda, Takeea, Troy (Chimere), Tameka, Tiffany, Ashley’Ella, Jazmine Watson (Darryl); Six grandsons, Aljabbar, J’wan, Kenny, Niemare, Nickolus, Nixon, five great-granddaughters, A’zhantae, Keniyah, Treazure, Aijana, A’zhiyah; one great-great-grandson A’zhon: one great-granddaughter Kalani One Sister-in Love Shirley Allen, Special Cousin Trisha Allen, and A dear Friend Mr. Pumpkin, and a host of devoted family and friends. Coming across the bridge to State St. will never be the same!
