Obituary of Carol R Ayers

Celebrating the Life & Legacy of Carol R. Ayers Carol Ruth Pegram, of Pennsauken NJ, was born May 21, 1943, to the late Fred and Alice Pegram in Philadelphia PA. She peacefully departed this life September 2, 2022. Carol grew up the only girl with three brothers, Eddie, David, and Frankie Pegram. Carol was a loving daughter and caring sister to her parents and siblings. While caring for her elderly Father, Carol learned she had a sister, Bernice Johnson. You already know what joy that relationship brought to her life. When they first met, Carol asked Bernice “do you hang” and she replied, “yes I do”. And the rest is history, they partied and traveled together. Carol received her education in the Philadelphia school system. She attended Gillespie Junior High and graduated from Simon Gratz High School in 1961 with hopes of becoming a teacher. Her hobbies including reading and of course dancing. Carol enjoyed house parties and would dance until the last record was played. It was no surprise Carol was loved by all who knew her, she was such a loyal and amazing friend. The original ‘Fly Girls”- Carol, Libby, Marva, and Bertha who were so close, that not only did they get married around the same time, but also had their children within days of each other. What a tight bond they shared. Carol married Ronald McHarris, in 1964, and from that union she had two beautiful daughters Deanna and Dawn. Oh, what joy they brought to her life, and everywhere you turned you saw Carol, Dee, and Dawn, the three amigos! Even though the marriage didn’t last Carol remained close to her in-laws Terry and Sherry. Early on, Carol was employed with the Internal Revenue Service then landed a job with the Government working for Social Security Administration. She was a hard worker and dedicated employee often working 6 days a week and at least 2-3 hours of overtime daily. Carol was known as “Mrs. stick to it” because she remained on her job with Social Security for 39 years. She was faithful! Carol work hard so she could play hard. She was often referred to as “Cadillac Carol” because that was her car of choice, as she owned several throughout her lifetime. Carol was so on point; she planned her retirement party after 39 years of service and made sure it fell on her birthday! Because now it was time for the fun to begin. In the mid 70’s while at a party no doubt, Carol met Ellis Ayers, who she loved dearly and married November 27, 1982. Carol and Ellis both enjoyed traveling and having a good time. From that union she inherited 5 stepchildren: Gina, Sherrena, Tonya, Michelle, and Leonard, who loved her dearly. Carol was a longtime member of Bethany Baptist Church in Lindenwold, NJ. She stayed faithful even through Covid and continued with her contributions. She was also a member of The Eastern Star Chapter. Carol wore many hats: a devoted daughter who took care of her elderly parents, a loving and supportive sister, a devoted niece who always stayed in touch with her aunts and uncles, a loving cousin, a devoted wife to her husband, a caring and loving mother to her daughters who she loved spending all her time with, and no matter how old they were, she was always momma bear. Carol was a wonderful grandmother (Nanny) to all her grandkids, and ruled with a heavy hand, whom she wanted the absolute best for in life. She was a loving and thoughtful aunt, who prepared her famous sweet potato pies during holidays for her niece and nephew, Lisa and Eddie. Carol was an amazing friend to all who knew her. Carol leaves behind to keep her memory alive: her beloved husband Ellis Ayers: daughters, Deanna Evans, Dawn McHarris; six grandchildren, Richard Evans Jr. (Jessica), Ian McHarris, Dominique Watkins (Ebbie), Darrian-Brown McHarris, James Lewis Jr. Maya Truitt; six great grandchildren, Lyn’Nasia, Ma’Ray, Leila, Ebbie III, Makayla, Amari; sister, Bernice Johnson; sister-in-laws, Terry Gilliam (Tino), Sherry Willis (Edward); nieces, nephews, and host of relatives and friends. “A WIFE, A MOTHER, A GRANDMA TOO,THIS IS THE LEGACY WE HAVE FROM YOU” Love the Family
