Please share a memory of Lorraine to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Alice Lorraine (Rozier) De Shields was born in Montgomery, Maryland on April 5, 1933. She moved to Camden in 1941 where she attended the public schools. She continued her education at Bordentown Manual School of training where she graduated in 1951. Lorraine accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior in her early twenties under the leadership of Reverend Charles Dawson. This began her lifelong journey of serving the Lord. Lorraine married Reverend Warren De Shields in 1952 and from that union three children were born. Sharon, Brian, and Warren (Skip).
Lorraine enjoyed working with children. Her first employment was a Nurse Assistant at Cooper Hospital. After completing a training course of a several weeks, the graduates were assigned to different floor in the hospital. She prayed that she could work with children and God answered her prayer and she found her place in the nursery of the hospital. She shared with her children many time that she didn’t know how she was going to make it having to raise three children on her own. She recalls that as she was walking to work early one morning, she clearly heard the voice of God saying, “Trust me Lorraine.” Those words she has committed to heart for the remainder of her life. She finished her career as the Center Coordinator of Stockton Elders under the Respond Inc. where she worked for many years.
Sis De Shields was very active in her church she enjoyed teaching children in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Daily News Club. When she could no longer teach the children, she moved on to teaching Seniors and West Jersey Hospital. Sis. DeShields served as Coordinator of Mt. Calvary’s ministry at Abigail House as the for Nursing and Rehabilitation for a number of years. She could often be found on the weekends volunteering to serve meals at Abigail and Majestic nursing homes. One of her many favorite sayings was “Any Day Now, He’s Coming for me or I’m going to him. She received her wish on September 18th. Now she is at home and at peace with her Savior whom she longed to be with.
