The Celebration of Oscar Garland, Jr.
Today, we pause at the cause of death to remember one we loved so dear, and knowing that God in His infinite wisdom works in His own way, we acknowledge the death of our Loved One, OSCAR GARLAND JR.
Oscar was born on September 11th,1929 as the oldest of nine children, to the late Oscar, Sr. and Fannie Delores Garland. He departed this life on Wednesday, April 12, 2023.
Oscar grew up in the close-knit circle of a warm, loving, caring, and often humorous family. At an early age his parents settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended and graduated from Bok Technical School. After graduating high school, Oscar joined the United States Navy where he served until being honorably discharged.
In September of 1947 Oscar met Shellie May Hall and after more than four years of courtship, on November 3,1951, they were united in Holy Matrimony. Oscar’s first cousin Daymond then married Shellie’s sister Lucille. The Union endured thirty-six years and ten months before being severed by death. From this union one daughter and three sons were born.
Oscar had various jobs which included being a milkman, mailman, bus driver then ultimately was employed by the Township of Deptford from 1975, until his retirement in 2008, working as the Building Code Inspector. In his spare time he loved gardening and fishing. He was an all-around easy going fun loving, kind gentlemen who loved his family and friends and was there whenever needed. Oscar was an amazing brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to many, having earned the respect of all with whom he has come in contact with, deserving of the love and affection of people from all walks of life and of all ages. He raised many generations of children, not just family, but generations of children in the community. His infectious love of life inspired many. We will miss her cheery smile and good deeds. He was everybody’s Uncle June!
He leaves to cherish his memory, one daughter Gail, three sons Kenneth, Anthony (Trent) wife Ellie, Oscar III (Tracy) wife Felita; one sister Gwendolyn and brother-in-law Robert Stroud, Sr.; one sister in law Lucille and brother-in law/first cousin Daymond Garland, Sr.; grandchildren Rochelle Kee, Brieann Drew, Lamar, Crystal, Zachery and Terrell; great grandchildren LaShawn Kee, Dexter Drew, Jamir and his caretaker Ariale, Jacier, Tatiana Drew and Aries., several nieces and nephews, and a host of cousins and friends.
