Obituary of James Muma Mwape
James Muma Mwape was born on January 16, 1962, to the late Nele Matipa Kapinga. He peacefully transitioned into the presence of the Lord on April 22, 2023.
James was born in Mwense, Zambia, but spent his childhood in Mufulira, Zambia, receiving his primary and secondary education there.
James had phenomenal educational achievements beyond the secondary school level. He initially moved to Poland, then China, for school, receiving a Polish Language Diploma from the University of Lodz in 1987, and a Chinese Language Diploma from the Beijing Language and Culture University in 1988.
James met and married the love of his life Ruth Mulando, on October 20, 1990, in Lusaka, Zambia. The couple immigrated to the United States, landing in New York City, and from this union was born three children, Natasha, James, Jr., and Simon.
James continued his education in New York, first attending Marymount Manhattan College, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in the year 2000. James then continued at Dowling College, earning a Master of Business Administration in 2002. His thirst and passion for further education led James to attend City University of New York, Lehman College, earning a Master of Science Education in 2004.
James’s past employment as an educator was in several school systems. They included Winslow Township High School, Tacony Academy Charter School, Yonkers Public Schools, and New York City Department of Education. His current employment was as a Chemistry Teacher at Camden County Technical School, Pennsauken Campus, also known as Pennsauken Tech.
James was also a businessman, consultant, and entrepreneur, having previously worked as a Business & Finance Manager at E-ZPass Group, and in Risk Management at MetLife and JPMorgan Chase & Co. in his early career.
James was the founder of Mwape Peer Awards, a non-profit initiative designed to annually recognize the achievements of Africans (initially Zambians but opened to all Africans beginning in 2014) both in and outside of Africa, in a variety of fields and industries. He is the author of three books which are, The Montessori Method in 2008, Guide to Electronic Toll Payments in 2009, and Mwape Who’s Who Among Zambians in 2010.
James was a wonderful husband and father. He loved his family and was devoted to their care and success. He was an intelligent man, full of purpose and principle. James was a dynamic communicator, with a charismatic upbeat personality. He was fun loving, energetic, and great to be around. He was very generous, selfless, kind, and considerate, and would
extend help to anyone. James touched many lives and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
James loved traveling the world. He lived in Zambia, Poland, and China. He also enjoyed meeting new people, driving on road trips, spending time with his family, and watching soccer and basketball.
James was preceded in death by his mother, Nele Matipa Kapinga; and his sister, Margaret Mwansa.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Ruth Mulando Mwape; one daughter, Natasha Mwape; two sons, James Mwape, Jr., and Simon Mwape; two brothers, Peter Kapungwe, and Alfred Kaluba, and a host of other relatives and friends.
