Obituary of Ernest D Johnson

Ernest D. Johnson, a beloved husband, educator, father, and friend passed away peacefully on July 12, 2024, in Melbourne, Florida at the age of 71.
Born on July 26, 1952, in Camden, New Jersey, Ernest dedicated his life to education and the well-being of his students. A proud graduate of Camden High School, Ernest went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from former Glassboro State College (Rowan University).
For 34 years, Ernest was a fixture in the Clayton Public School District, where he taught middle school Social Studies. His passion for History and dedication to his students were evident in every lesson he crafted and every interaction he had. He was awarded Teacher of the Year twice and left a lasting impact on countless young minds as Advisor to the Black Culture Club. He was inducted into the Clayton Athletic Hall of Fame for his job as Assistant Coach to the 1979-80 Basketball State Championship Team.
Ernest was not only an exceptional educator but also a mentor to many of his colleagues. His advice, support, and encouragement helped shape the careers of several teachers in the district. After retirement Ernest became a snowbird living in Vero Beach for half of the year but he was still actively involved in the Camden school community, contributing to Camden Hope and Heritage a community organization dedicated to enriching the lives of students at Camden High School. Outside of school, Ernest was a devoted Eagles fan, dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and befriender of all.
He leaves to mourn his passing a devoted wife Carlene Johnson , daughters Leona (Jason) Coles and Linda (Calvin) Johnson their mother Bernice Johnson and his grandchildren, Latrice, Janiece, Linda, Vivian, and Carly. Great-Grandchildren London, Laila, and Lauryn. He is also remembered fondly by his siblings, Dr. Charles (Carolyn) Johnson of Townsend, Delaware and Minister Leona Johnson Dawson of Charlotte, North Carolina along with many nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceded in death by his mother Ethelene Bryant and brother Vernon Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made by check to Camden Hope and Heritage and sent to 1963 North Birchwood Park drive Cherry Hill, NJ 08003 in Ernest’s honor, to support the social and educational initiatives that were close to his heart.
Ernest D. Johnson’s legacy lives on through the many lives he touched and the values he imparted. He will be remembered for his kindness, humor and his unwavering commitment to education. His memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. His living has not been in vain.
