Mary Judith Nelson, favorably known as Judy, was the youngest of 3 girls born to Mattie Penn Lesesne and Samuel Lesesne on October 20, 1944 in Harlem, New York City. Judy attended the New York City Public School System where she graduated from George Washington High School.
She was united in matrimony to John Richard Nelson on July 17, 1963. In this union, they were blessed with two children, Leslie Coxen and Lisa Nelson.
Judy worked at General Motors for 35 years as a Data Entry Coordinator. She was known for being meticulous and orderly.
Judy was a loving and devoted woman. She always put the people she loved first and made sure everyone was taken care of. Her pleasant personality was contagious to everyone. Judy enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and shared her hospitality and home.
The simplest pleasures in life brought Judy great joy. She enjoyed all types of puzzles, reading, and hosting game and movie nights. She was known as the “sports grandmom” as she watched and attended many baseball, football, basketball, softball games, and dance recitals. She also shared her love of baking and cooking with her daughters and granddaughter.
Her faith and love for God remained strong until her last breath. Judy passed away on April 1, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor her legacy by living their lives to the fullest. She is preceded in death by her parents Samuel and Mattie Lesesne; sister, Madeline Hunt; and daughter Leslie Coxen.
Her life and memory will be forever cherished by her loved ones. Judy leaves behind her husband of 58 years, John Richard Nelson; daughter, Lisa Nelson; four grandchildren, Jamir Bennett (Alexis Francese), Amanda Coxen, Nate Coxen Jr.,(Kiana Williams), and Jonathan Coxen; three great-grandchildren, Carmine Bennett, Aviana Williams, and Jamir Bennett; and sister, Gloria Nelson (Edward Nelson), and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
